John Hernandez

By Robert Michael Herrera

John Hernandez is a full-time student with determination to succeed and challenge the world.

Hernandez works part time while attending classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to pursue an associate’s degree in Mathematics. His course schedule this semester consists of English, Biology, Math, Government and History.

“I hope to one day become a math teacher. My math teachers were horrible in high school, and I’d like to fix that,” said Hernandez.

A busy schedule throughout the day keeps Hernandez occupied with little time for friends and family. His only time to himself is on the weekends, when he relaxes and spends time with those close to him. Weekends are reserved for family and fun, he said. At the Hernandez residence, you will always find joy when the weekend begins.

“It’s my only time to get away, to do what I want and to spend time with the people whom I love and keep me going,” said Hernandez.

When Monday arrives after a short two-day weekend, the books appear and a job needs to get done. Every week is routine for Hernandez, who works at a nearby H-E-B. After his last class at 2 p.m., Hernandez goes home to prepare himself for an 8-hour shift at 3 p.m.

“I kinda get sad when I have to leave the campus,” said Hernandez. “It’s a place where I can call home. It’s where I get to learn what I need to do to be successful in life. I love Palo Alto. Everyone here has helped jump start my career and put me on the right track to success.”
