Movie theaters young adults remember are quickly becoming a thing of the
past. Old ways of purchasing a ticket and popcorn seem substandard, almost
outdated. Todays theaters like The Alamo Draft House, The Bijou and
The Slab offer a more unique and contemporary way of watching cinema.
The Alamo Draft House, located at 1255 S.W. Loop 410, is the latest and
most distinctive of the modern movie houses in San Antonio. In addition
to first-run features, The Alamo Draft House offers a variety of cult-classic
films throughout the week---everything from clichéd seventies Kung
Fu films to the latest horror picture. |
"They show some classic movies. Its a nice place to have drinks with friends and see old movies on the big screen," said Tiffany Nieto, freshman Psychology major at Palo Alto.
Not only are audiences able to choose different films but different foods as well. On top of the standard popcorn and nachos, spectators have a wide selection of meals and spirits to choose from. Hamburgers and pizzas are offered, each with its own distinctive movie-themed name and flavor.
On the other side of modern movie houses is The Bijou at Crossroads located on the lower level inside Crossroads Mall, where 410 and I-10 intersect.
The Bijou offers a toned-down and slightly artistic flavor to its movie-going experience. Housing a warm and creative atmosphere that includes its own art gallery, The Bijou also provides a unique menu.
"We serve food and give the best service. This is where true movie lovers come," said Todd Walters, Bijou Theater manager.
The Bijou sets itself apart from The Alamo Draft House in the films it showcases. A true art-house theater, The Bijou offers no mainstream films, but only the latest in independent cinema.
"Most movies shown there are a rarity in San Antonio theaters. Even if you dont live in the area, its worth the trip," said Jonathan Ramirez, freshman Art major.
The average movie-going experience is quietly changing, and theaters are answering the call. The Slab, located at 100 Probandt, gives people a chance to catch classic films outdoors. Admission is free.
But if one chooses not to brave the crowds, one may go no further than their mailbox. Netflix and Blockbuster, with a monthly fee, give anyone with the Internet the ability to receive and view movies without ever leaving home.
Felicia Esquivel, a sophomore Criminal Justice major, said, "Its easier. No late fees. Just one payment every month. As long as you dont lose the movie, its okay."
Viewers preferences, free time, disposable incomes and appetites are factors now coming into play when serving the latest film fare to modern movie aficionados. As ways of bringing the cinema to the masses broaden, consumers will choose which way suits their fancy and vote with their dollars and their time. |
