Prevention month and the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory
Services (PRS), Prevent Child Abuse Texas and the Childrens Trust
Fund of Texas (CFT) are offering a Prevention Kit to individuals, communities
and groups in Texas. The kits contain community and parent education materials, ideas and suggestions on ways to keep children safe and special activities for children of all ages. Visit www.itsuptoyou.org on the web, or call (512) 438-4800 for more information. It does not matter
what your question may be, Stacey Sylman, the Health Coordinator of Palo
Alto College, is always glad to help someone out. Sylman, a registered
nurse, enjoys her job because it offers a great opportunity to work with
people. Her daily goal is to help anyone who is in need of over-the-counter
medication, health counseling, a community referral, health-related literature
or directions to find something or someone. Stop by her office, located
in the Student Center across from the Bursars Office. The center invites organizations and businesses from around San Antonio to Palo Alto to offer students and staff members the opportunity to receive health services free of charge or at a reduced rate. The deadline for the LULAC Parent/Child Scholarship is May 5, 2001, and the deadline for the Kimmelman Child Care Scholarship is May 7, 2001. Both may be turned in to the Returning Adult Center, located in the Palomino Center, Room 119. For more information, call 921-5382, or stop by the RAC office. The Performing Arts
Building has been filled with art pieces and sculptures from the rural
high school exhibit, but some people may think twice before going into
that building. Despite the hard work and dedication put into the exposition,
the smell produced by the material used to pin the artwork up may keep
some people away. Even though the Homasote
Burlap Panels, installed in PAB and the Palomino Center, are environmentally
safe, free of asbestos or formaldehyde additives, they are foul smelling.
The panels cost $91 a sheet, and they were purchased to prevent
damage to the walls in the buildings, said Leo Mancilla, Master
Plumber, Palo Alto College. The material should not be installed in areas where excessive cold or hot temperatures and/or excessive dampness are present. All three of those factors exist in both of the buildings, which causes the material to produce the smell. Congratulations to
Jesus Sanchez, ACCD student, Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement major,
Fencing coach and athlete who won the Bronze medal at a national fencing
event in Overland Park, KS, on March 19, 2001. In addition, Samantha
Arnold, former Palo Alto Student and coach at Palo Alto for the Dreams
for Youth program has produced a documentary video on the fencing program.
The video, titled Our Way, was presented for the first time
in the PAC Cafeteria on April 19, 2001. The video showcases how fencing
has impacted the lives of disadvantaged youth. Palo Alto College
will host a Regional Youth Circuit Fencing Event on May 19-20, 2001, in
the PAC Gym for children 14 years of age and under. On June 11-15, 2001,
a developmental fencing camp for children seven years and older will be
held during the Summer at Palo Alto College from 8:00 a.m. noon.
The top fencers who competed in the Divisional competition that took place on April 21-22, 2001, and the Sectional competition will qualify to attend the National Championship for Fencing in Sacramento, CA, on July 3-11, 2001. The Ethics Bowl Team
will begin preparing for the Regional Competition in the Fall. This year
was Palo Altos third year to participate in ethics bowls at both
the regional and national levels. Each year, a new group of students are
selected for the team. Participation in the Ethics Bowl team is open to
all Palo Alto College students. For more information contact, John Hernandez at 921-5037 or e-mail him at johernan@accd.edu. |
