On the weekend of April 29-30 the Palo Alto College Men’s Soccer team hosted its first 7 versus 7 tournament. The Palo Alto College team played against St. Mary’s University, San Antonio College, Northwest Vista College and the Victoria College soccer clubs. Games were held every Saturday starting in March and they concluded with a tournament that was held this past weekend. The Palo Alto College team made it to the semi-final round before being defeated by the eventual champion, San Antonio College. Coach Edgar Gonzalez, adjunct faculty in the Kinesiology Department and men’s and women’s soccer coach, was encouraged by his team’s performance. “I was very proud of the men’s teams’ accomplishments. I want to continue to build and I hope this becomes an inspiration to everyone who loves the sport,” Gonzalez said. Coach Gonzalez, who played professional soccer in Mexico and Columbia, said that the soccer program, which began in Fall 2010, started slow but is building nicely. Although the program is relatively new, the soccer team here at PAC has proven that they can compete with schools that have far more students. They have played UTSA to a 3-3 tie and they have also played against Houston Community College to a 1-1 tie. Edy Chimalhua, a freshman undecided major said, “The program was great, and I had a great time with it. Soccer is my life.” If you are interested in the Palo Alto College soccer program, please contact Coach Gonzalez at egonzalez446@alamo.edu. |
