Working to succeed, students finding jobs

Choosing the right job and having enough time to get schoolwork done can be quite a task. |
Working a part-time job and attending Palo Alto College full-time is an experience that most college students here go through. "I have been working and going to school for about three years," said Jordan Losoya, a Pre-Law major at Palo Alto College, who works as a lifeguard in the Natatorium. Getting paid a decent amount of money usually requires working long hours, but it may compromise valuable time needed to study or get homework done. On the other hand, having a job making good pay with minimal hours gives students enough time to get homework and extracurricular assignments completed on time. Having a job in a restaurant has many benefits. Many different positions are available to work, such as host/hostess, server or assistant positions. The pay is good and a comfortable atmosphere provides a pleasant work experience. Kimberly Garcia, Performing Arts major at Palo Alto College agrees. "I enjoy working in a restaurant. I currently work at Hooters and have been there for a year." When asked what she enjoys most about working in a restaurant she said, "They have always worked around my school schedule." Getting the hands-on experience of a teacher is beneficial. We all strive to be teachers to someone someday, whether we teach our children or other students. Working with children of various ages gives insight on ways to communicate with many children at one time. Most daycare or after-school positions pay well, but many only allow a limited number of hours per week. As an after-school teacher, a typical schedule is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, but only 15 hours a week can be sufficient if the hourly pay is reasonable. Having a seasonal job is another option students can look into. Sea World and Fiesta Texas are a prime example. These jobs are usually flexible with schedules and only require employment for three to four months. Most jobs offering seasonal positions are clothing outlet or shops in the mall. When choosing the right job, students must keep in mind their goals. If a student needs some extra spending money, they may settle for the first opportunity presented. A student needing to make rent payments will have to compromise for a steady paycheck. With many jobs to choose from, making the right decision can be complicated but rewarding. The Center for Academic Transitions helps direct students to the right path. Their services include: work-study, employer recruitment, job fairs, career information, career interest assessment and career planning. CAT is located in the Student Center, Room 101. The hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m to 7 p.m, Friday, 8 a.m to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m to 1 p.m., only in the Welcome Center. Students must remember to apply to more than just a couple of positions and to choose an employer who is aware of your school schedule. If not, you may be stuck pulling all-night study sessions more than a few times during the semester. Take your time, and choose wisely. |
