Palo Alto College not only provides its students a high quality education, but it also provides them with assistance they may need along the way.

The struggles of paying for high-priced textbooks, tuition, fees and child care services tend to overwhelm many students and leave them with very little extra money to support themselves.

"Through the Welcome Enrollment Center, our staff is able to provide assistance to students who need help connecting to community resources," said Larry Rodriguez, co-chair of Counseling.

Welcome Enrollment Center Liaison and Education Support Specialist Eloisa Cordova said, "I research and refer students to agencies such as United Way, Catholic Charities, Housing Authority of San Antonio, Child Care Services and Family Violence Prevention Services."

With options like these, students may receive help for food, house payments, CPS bills, domestic violence and child care.

Palo Alto College also offers six internal scholarships and about 10 external scholarships to students to help pay for tuition and or books for a semester or two.

Scholarships Support Services also provides students with a head start in their career by offering two paid internships over the summer and a guaranteed job to follow.

Another service on campus available to students is the PASSkey Program, which offers Student Success Workshops, such as college survival skills, time management and tutoring assistance.

PASSkey Project Director Patty Medina said, "We enjoy helping students down the right path. All we need them to be is serious and have goals."

The college also provides Disability Support Services to students who may need help with note-taking, interpreting (for the deaf) and extended test time. This allows students more one-on-one time with their studies.

"Our services are no extra charge, and we are here to help; it’s just up to the student to make the effort to come see us," said Student Note Taker and Reader-Scribe Danielle Dawn Reyes.
