W.O.W is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game with more than 8 million players worldwide asof January 11, 2007. Unlike normal role-playing games where there are set character lists, storylines and scenery, W.O.W is an ever-changing world of adventure and interactivity.

“If you haven’t played W.O.W, you haven’t lived,” said sophomore Sarah Ramirez, a Criminal Justice major at Palo Alto College who loves the interactivity of the game. Meeting new people in the game is a constant delight for her.

“World of Warcraft is number one,” said freshman Jason Mundine, a Computer Information System major at Palo Alto College.

Mundine likes to raid. He enjoys getting a group of friends together and venturing to different dungeons to defeat infamous villains and collect legendary armor and weapons.

“It really is the best game ever,” said Joe Rosales, Desktop Publishing Specialist at the Alamo Community College District Print Shop.

There are many trade skills in W.O.W, and Rosales likes to master them all. A crafter by heart, he loves perfecting a new skill and selling and trading with other characters.

W.O.W focuses around two factions: the Alliance and the Horde. The Alliance races consist of Human, Night Elf, Dwarf, Gnome and Draenei. The Horde races include Undead, Blood Elf, Orc, Troll and Tauren. Each side has nine classes to choose from: Warrior, Paladin, Shaman, Hunter, Rogue, Druid, Priest, Mage and Warlock. Each race has their own unique abilities and statistics, and each class has three ways of setting their skills to give variety to the same class. Each race also has their own unique background stories.

New people come into the game every day, so there are always new people to play along with. Not only are there different people playing every, day but there are different worlds or servers that have different interactivity rules.

Players describe the game’s interactivity as great, awesome, terrific, the best, and incomparable. The interactivity ranges from type talking to members of the same faction to getting together with 40 other people and adventuring through expansive dungeons or fighting dragons.

“The game play is great, because it supports all types of game play,” said Rosales.

In W.O.W, you can play however you want. If you are the kind who likes to wander around and discover new places, there are several places to explore, some safer than others. If you like to go on epic quests and help the people of the land, there are an almost unlimited number of quests that can be done for armor, weapons, riches or fame.

You may also build up trade skills, with many professions to choose from. You may sell your skills or items to fellow players for a nice profit or just to bolster yourself.

If defeating other players is your favorite activity, there are many ways to do this. If you are in a PVP server, you can go around hunting members of the opposite faction on the field. Not all of those fights are fair, but that’s how the world goes. Or, if you like more ordered combats, you can always visit your local Battlemaster to enter a battleground match and fight characters at your level. Also, there is a duel arena, where two-on-two and up to five-on-five fights occur.

“A lot of people I know, including myself, play Warcraft instead of watching TV. It’s more participatory,” said Rosales.

W.O.W is also a family game. Many people play with their friends and family instead of watching television. But W.O.W. isn’t all sweetness and light.

Fist view of a brand new expansion to the game

“World of Warcraft has a dark side,” said Mundine.

If you have an overly addictive personality, then this game might be a little too much, Mundine cautioned. Some players have been known to play 24/7, ignoring their other obligations, making it more of a habit than a game. Take all things in moderation, even W.OW.

W.OW offers free one-week trials that you can get any place games are sold, like Game Stop, EB Games and Best Buy. If you do buy the game, the first month is free, after that it’s $13.99 per month.
