New courses for new semesters

New courses are being offered at Palo Alto this and upcoming semesters.

One new course is COMM 2324: Basic Digital Video Production, called Practicum in Electronic Media in the Palo Alto Bulletin.

In this 3-hour course taught by former CBS News Producer Greg Pasztor, you learn basic skills of capturing light, images, composition, sound and how to properly frame people.

Another course that will be available in the upcoming 3-week Maymester is a program for students to study Spanish and art in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Mark Hogensen will be teaching ARTS 1301:Art Appreciation, and faculty at Kukulcan, an educational Spanish community, will teach SPAN 1300: Beginning Conversational Spanish. Included in the costs are weekly half-day excursions, a home stay and three meals a day. Contact Hogensen at mhogense@accd.edu.

In the fall, HUMA 1301 is going to focus completely on San Antonio. The purpose is to teach students about how the city developed. The course, taught by Mariana Ornelas, will focus on issues such as environmental protection and economic development.

PHTC 1349: Photo Digital Imaging will be offered in the fall by Lloyd Walsh. This is a studio course that uses an electronic darkroom. Students will focus on using digital photography as a fine arts medium. Karen Mahaffy will teach ARTS 2349: Digital Arts II a digital video course.


CRIJ 2301: Community Resources in Corrections, taught by Steve Mardock, will be offered in Summer II. The course is an introductory study of the role of the community in corrections. CRIJ 2323: Legal Aspects of Law Enforcement will also be offered in the fall. The course studies police authority, responsibilities, and search and seizure.

HMSY 1342: Understanding and Combating Terrorism is a study of terrorism and reasons why America is a terrorist target. HMSY 1343: Weapons of Mass Destruction will also be offered in the fall. David Panter is the instructor.

HIST 2381: African-American History will be taught in the Fall 2005 by Peter Myers. The course features the history of Africa, African-Americans in the Western Hemisphere before the American Civil War and African Americans in the Modern Era.

David Rutschman will teach ENGL 2307: Creative Writing for the first time in the Fall. He has won awards for his fiction. Ruth Ann Gambino will teach ENGL 1301: Freshman Composition as a hybrid course, part classroom and part online.

Elsa Zambrano is teaching HRPO: 2301 Human Resource Management, which deals with behavioral and legal approaches to handling personnel in organizations. In the fall, she will teach HRPO 2307: Organizational Behavior, IBUS 1305: Introduction to International Business, and QCTC 1305: Teaming.

Another fall course is ECON 2311: Economic Geography taught by Jonathan Fink.

Early registration begins April 18.
