High School Equivalency Program

The High School Equivalency Program at Palo Alto College is designed to help migrant and seasonal farm workers pursue a GED. HEP provides assistance with transportation, testing fees, classroom instruction, academic and vocational counseling. The classes meet two or four times a week with afternoon and evening sessions available. For more information, contact the HEP staff at 921-5410.

PAC students compete in Ethics Bowl

A team of Palo Alto students, under the direction of Assistant Professor of Philosophy John Hernandez, competed in the Sixth Annual South Central regional Ethics Bowl on November 13, 2004, at St. Mary’s University. Ali Watson, Melissa Tellez, and Travil Bowles finished in third place of the 14 teams who competed.

Cell Phone Collection Drive a big success

The fundraiser, which was held during the month of October, exceeded its goal of collecting 100 phones, with the final count at 181. The cell phones will be donated to the SAPD Victims Advocacy Unit and the P.E.A.C.E. Initiative.

Financial Aid available for students

Spring term is right around the corner. With the approaching semester you may be wondering how are you going to pay for tuition and supplies. Palo Alto’s Financial Aid Department has many options for students. If you are wanting to apply for Federal Family Education Loan Program, you need to remember that your deadline for an application is April 1. The deadline for financial aid was on Nov. 1, but don’t lose hope. You still can apply for financial aid, but it could take four to six weeks to process. If financial aid isn’t for you, you may also talk to the Bursar’s Office about a payment plan. For all your financial aid needs, you may speak with those in the Financial Aid Office located in Palomino Center, Room 113.

Texas A&M-Kingsville at Palo Alto College thrives

The enrollment at TAMUK-System Center San Antonio has greatly improved. Twice as many students have enrolled since 2002, with more than 1,000 students this year. The bachelor’s degree-granting school now offers majors in Accounting, Computer Information Systems, BAAS-Human Relations, BAAS-Business Administration, Sociology, Criminology, Psychology, Education, History, English, Kinesiology, Management, Math and Secondary Education.

Women’s Basketball Team scores winning season

Palo Alto College women’s basketball team played their final game this semester, beating Southwest Texas Junior College. With that win, they finished with a perfect 8-0 record for this season. The student athletes are Crystal Gomez, Claudia Chavez, Melanie Converse, Victoria Lopez, Jessica DeLa Torre, Britany Knighton, Shirley Williams, Kristen Minor, Jennifer Salazar, Brenda Tijerina, Krystal Borrego, Alma Garcia, Priscilla Palomares, Allison Zimmermann, and Priscilla De Los Santos. The team is coached by Stephen A. Schriedel.

ACCD Board of Trustees calls for Bond Election

The election scheduled for Feb. 5, 2005, is to approve a bond that totals $450 million to fund improvements for the District’s four colleges: Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, St. Philip’s College, and San Antonio College. The bond will also aid in the construction of a northeast college and a Nursing and Allied Health Campus. For more information, visit the ACCD webpage at www.accd.edu.
