Hidden away in a corner of our campus is a place where students can become aware of their creative potential. In this place, there are no wrongs and distinction is a blessing.

This place is Palo Alto’s Fine and Performing Arts Buildings. Here you can find students who have chosen to explore their creative genius and express themselves in ways some never thought possible.
“To see a student discover the creative side of themselves is amazing!” said Cakky Brawley, an instructor of Art at Palo Alto.
We are all aware of those everyday subjects that we can choose to make our major, but what about not-so-standard majors that are offered in these buildings?

Palo Alto hosts a variety of classes that can get students started on path toward majors like: Art, Drama, Music and Speech Communication.
Students interested in learning about art can take classes like Drawing, Sculpture, Ceramics, Photography, Graphics and more.

“Art is everywhere around us,” said Cristina Muniz, a sophomore Art major. She should know. Muniz said she has taken every Art class offered here on campus and has really enjoyed them all. Palo Alto’s Art Department faculty and students are recognized in the San Antonio Art Community. Cristina recently was given the opportunity to have an art show in the Blue Star Art Complex and was able to sell one of her paintings for $200.

Those who wish to express themselves in the theatrical sense can head to Palo Alto’s Drama Department to find information on classes in Acting, Stage Make-Up, Voice and Articulation, as well as others. The Drama Department just completed a successful production of “Spoon River Anthology.”

For those students who just can’t stop feeling the beat, the Music Department gets you grooving. There are courses for all levels of music, including Palo Alto’s Jazz Band and Mariachi Palomino. There is also Choir, Guitar and Piano. Palo Alto’s Music Department also offers many other learning opportunities for those who dream of being in the musical limelight.

Students who wish to improve or perfect their communication skills are also catered to on campus. There are classes like Speech, Interpersonal Communication, Sign Language, Public Speaking and a wide variety of other courses aiming to help students discover new avenues of communicating.

The advantage our campus provides in offering these courses, according to Brawley, is “the outstanding faculty, who posses great knowledge of their subjects and are truly active in the San Antonio Art community.”

Pick up a Spring schedule to find out class times and locations. Also, consult the Student Bulletin (catalog). The Fine Arts and Performing Arts Buildings are located side-by-side on of the General Education Building. Call 921-5345 for more information.
