million awarded to Palo Alto U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez announced on June 15 that Palo Alto College received a five-year, $1.8 million grant. The federal grant falls under Title V, which is directed toward the development of Hispanicserving institutions. Palo Alto's student body consists of 65 percent Hispanic and 30 percent White/Non-Hispanic. The grant will assist in the improvement of student success and the retention of students at Palo Alto. The grant period began on Oct. 1, 2000, and $367,871 will be awarded in the first year. $1,500

awarded Current Palo Alto winners include Jeanette Colunga, Jesse Contreras, Mariann Durbin, Jennifer Gomez, Nicole Annette Lyssy and Tabitha M. Queeney. Incoming high school winners include Melissa M. Gatica, Kennedy High School; Carl Ortmann II and Olaya Valadez of Poth High School; and Crystal Pfeil, of Floresville High School. The Frank M. Tejeda/Palo Alto College Scholarship was established in April 1996, in honor of U.S. Congressman Frank M. Tejeda, who died of brain cancer in January 1997. Student Spotlight Haskins played intramural basketball for Palo Alto, which competes with fellow Alamo Community College District schools San Antonio College and St. Philip's College. Haskins caught the eye of the Division III NAIA School while at tryouts for the University of the Incarnate Word. McPherson is a private, liberal arts school located in McPherson, Kansas. Eric Williamson, another former Palo Alto student, walked onto the Schreiner College basketball squad this Fall, after developing his skills while playing for Palo Alto's intramural basketball team. Gualadupe Flores, a former Palo Alto double major in Communications and Drama, was awarded a $1,500 scholarship by the San Antonio Hispanic Journalists Association. Flores transferred to the University of the Incarnate Word in the Spring of 2000. Sophomore Communications major Laura Castillo is a member of the San Antonio Spurs Silver Dancers for a second consecutive year. Self-Study volunteers
