$1.8 million awarded to Palo Alto
U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez announced on June 15 that Palo Alto College received a five-year, $1.8 million grant.

The federal grant falls under Title V, which is directed toward the development of Hispanic–serving institutions. Palo Alto's student body consists of 65 percent Hispanic and 30 percent White/Non-Hispanic.

The grant will assist in the improvement of student success and the retention of students at Palo Alto. The grant period began on Oct. 1, 2000, and $367,871 will be awarded in the first year.

$1,500 Grant given to SLAC
The ACCD Foundation awarded the Student Learning Assistance Center $1,500 to help fund the development of SPICE Online. Located within SLAC, the Support Program for Improving College Education (SPICE) Online is an Internet-based education program designed to help students in English, mathematics and reading. The objective of the program is to prepare students to retake and pass the TASP test.

Currently 300 Palo Alto students are enrolled in SPICE Online, which is the first of its kind in the Alamo Community College District.

Tejeda Scholarships awarded
Six current Palo Alto College students and four incoming high school students have been selected to receive the Frank M. Tejeda/Palo Alto College Scholarship. Each winner will receive $1,000 for the academic year 2000-01.

Current Palo Alto winners include Jeanette Colunga, Jesse Contreras, Mariann Durbin, Jennifer Gomez, Nicole Annette Lyssy and Tabitha M. Queeney. Incoming high school winners include Melissa M. Gatica, Kennedy High School; Carl Ortmann II and Olaya Valadez of Poth High School; and Crystal Pfeil, of Floresville High School.

The Frank M. Tejeda/Palo Alto College Scholarship was established in April 1996, in honor of U.S. Congressman Frank M. Tejeda, who died of brain cancer in January 1997.

Student Spotlight
Former Palo Alto student Thomas Haskins earned a partial scholarship to play basketball this fall at McPherson College.

Haskins played intramural basketball for Palo Alto, which competes with fellow Alamo Community College District schools San Antonio College and St. Philip's College. Haskins caught the eye of the Division III NAIA School while at tryouts for the University of the Incarnate Word. McPherson is a private, liberal arts school located in McPherson, Kansas.

Eric Williamson, another former Palo Alto student, walked onto the Schreiner College basketball squad this Fall, after developing his skills while playing for Palo Alto's intramural basketball team.

Gualadupe Flores, a former Palo Alto double major in Communications and Drama, was awarded a $1,500 scholarship by the San Antonio Hispanic Journalists Association. Flores transferred to the University of the Incarnate Word in the Spring of 2000.

Sophomore Communications major Laura Castillo is a member of the San Antonio Spurs Silver Dancers for a second consecutive year.
