Airplane clipart Aviation Technology, a comparitively new and unique offering in San Antonio area colleges, is one of Palo Alto's long list of majors. The Aviation

Technology major tutors students in the operation and maintenance of aircraft and aircraft technology. The program was established within the Alamo Community College District at Palo Alto College 12 years ago by Bruce Hoover, who is no longer affiliated with the school.

“Hoover was primarily responsible for establishing the program,” said Theron Georges, instructor and program manager of the Department of Aviation Technology.

The program gives students the opportunity to learn a very challenging and rewarding skill. Enrolled students also receive a 20 percent discount on flight training costs. Upon completion of their coursework, students will have earned an Associates in Applied Science degree.

The program offers two tracks: Professional Pilot and Aviation Management. The first track requires 71 credit hours of course work.

“That track would be the one for those wanting jobs as airline or corporate pilot,” said Georges.

The second track is for those who want to work in other capacities within the aviation field.

“All academic courses are held here at Palo Alto,“ said Georges. “Next semester The Private Pilot Ground School will be offered by a company called Flight Safety at the San Antonio International Airport.”

Right now, the program, in partnership with former graduate Howard Lowery, is offering students the opportunity for part-time and full time employment at Stinson Air Center in line service positions. Lowery may be reached at the Stinson Air Center at 924-6634.

If you are one who loves to fly or have always wanted to, make Palo Alto's Aviation Technology program your choice. Contact Georges in Room 137 in the General Education Building or at 921-5173. Whatever you do, don't let the chance fly by.
