Need to relieve a little stress? Increase your energy level? Palo Alto
College makes it easy for students to obtain these and other benefits
by creating their own fitness program.
The Gymnasium and Natatorium Complex houses a gym, a pool and a weight
room for PAC students with a current I.D. Students who do not have time
for team sports or a P.E. class can still take advantage of these free
facilities.
Susan Gunderson, physical fitness and personal nutrition instructor
at Palo Alto, said that designing a fitness plan can be easily remembered
by using the acronym F.I.T.T. for frequency, intensity, time, and type.
Frequency establishes how much and how often you work out. For the best
results, work out at least three to five times a week. Intensity is
the target heart rate. You should be able to talk but not sing during
a workout.
Time includes the goals and progress set for weight loss and toning.
Type includes aerobic and anaerobic conditioning. Aerobic activity involves
continuous exercising like running or swimming. Anaerobic conditioning
involves non-continuous exercising like weight training.
It is important for anyone beginning a personal fitness program to consult
their doctor if they have any concerns or questions about their training
program.
Students who use this method for personal workouts experience changes
not only in their weight, but also in their self- image and self-esteem.
Physical fitness improves your overall well-being.
Melissa Ninete, a sophomore business finance major at Palo Alto College
said, "Working out is part of my life. I take advantage of the
gym here on campus. It beats paying for a membership."
Nutrition is another key element in your fitness plan. There will be
a free nutrition and weight loss class on Nov. 12, 1998, at 2:30 p.m.
in the gymnasium. "Exercise can make up for a so-so diet, but a
really good diet cant make-up for not exercising," said Gunderson.
