Ramiro Robles was born on July 7, 1934 in
Acuna Coahuila to Gilberto and Graciela Robles. Ramiro was the third born child of 7 including him. His sisters and brothers names are Eva, Elida, Berta, Raul, Gilberto, and Arturo. My grandfather stayed in Coahuila till the age of 12 where he dropped out of school in the fourth grade. Ramiro learned how to drive when he was 15 years old. In 1945 he moved to Los Angeles Tamaulipas where he met my grandmother Graciela Ramirez. They got married on December 28, 1956 and have been happily married for 58 years now. In 1956 my grandfather and his family moved to Monterrey and then later moved to Miguel Aleman Tamaulipas. On June 18, 1957 their first daughter Laura Luz Robles was born followed by 9 more children. Ramiro started working as a bus driver in Mexico for the grey hound buses in 1959 and continued to work until 1966. In 1978 my grandparents migrated to Roma Texas and in the same year my grandfather started working during the year driving 18 wheelers and during the summer working in the fields He has gone to work in the fields in California, Colorado, and West Texas, and stopped working in the fields in 1991. How did you get to the United States?
43 years ago I got to the United States legally. I came alone in my pickup truck. I didn’t want tocross over without any papers so I decided to do things the right way

How was it like to start a new life in the United States with your family?
Starting a new life in a new country was very hard. I was alone and I didn’t know English socommunicating with people was extremely hard. I brought my family to the United States after 8 yearsof being here in San Antonio.

How was life in Mexico?
Everything was very calm not like now a days that there is so much violence with the drugcartels. I was always working trying to get enough money to go over to the United States. I went to theU.S to financially get better but overall my life was really good.

Why did you drop out of school at such an early age?
I dropped out because at that age my parents and many of other children’s parents weren’t strict about going to school. If I didn’t want to go I didn’t have to, so I just stopped going to school aswell as many of the children I knew.

How were the living conditions like in Mexico different than the U.S?
Well moving to the United States was different because of how people did things and how things were just set up. I came from a place where I knew everybody and I knew where places were, where I could go and earn some money. That was the different part about moving but the way I lived was somewhat the same besides of course the house. The house was a bit bigger and better than theone in Mexico. In Mexico we were limited to do things because of the money. And here on the United States I got paid a lot more so I got better opportunities.

Would you of liked to continue to go to school when you were younger?
Yes I would have liked to continue to go to school. I do regret dropping out at such an early age because maybe I could have gotten something better out of it. But since my parents weren’t strict about it I just thought it was easy to just stop going.

Do you remember how much you used to make in Mexico and in San Antonio?
In Mexico I used to make 150pesos($15) daily but this was 43 years ago of course so things area lot different now. And here in San Antonio I would make 300 a week.

How did you get your first job?
I got my first job as a mechanic in a small mechanic shop. My dad new the owner of a shop named “Gomez y hijos” which is “Gomez and sons” and asked him to give me a job there. The man I worked for later helped me come over to the United States.

Instead of working, what would you rather had been wanting to do?
I would rather be playing baseball. I liked it a lot, it was my favorite sport but since I was always working I didn’t have much time to play. I was a good player, I do wish I would have kept playing and maybe played for a team.

If there is something that you would change what would it be?
I would like to be 20 years younger, that’s the only thing I would like to change. The reason being is because I would like to continue to work since I can’t anymore and there is nothing much to do at home. And working would keep me occupied since I like to keep busy and would keep bringing in money.

Is there something you would like to add?
I was and am a really happy person. I have god to thank for, for blessing me with a good family and for giving me all these years of life. I have a great wife, kids, grandkids and great grandkids who I love very much.

ANALYSIS

The most important point made in this interview was that nothing comes easy. You have to go through the worst in order to get to the best and nothing is handed to you unless you work for it. Nothing is ever easy but you never give up. I interviewed my grandfather and all the things I learned from him I thought was so amazing. I wish I could have known all of this before doing this project because it was something really cool to hear about. When my grandfather was a child he dropped out of school, his parents weren’t strict about going to school so he just stopped going. I also didn’t know that my grandfather loved to play baseball and that’s pretty awesome. I enjoyed hearing all his stories and I will be asking him a lot more after the project is over. My view on immigration didn’t change much because I knew that my grandfather had moved around alot due to working in the fields. There is only one time my grandfather showed his feelings and that was when he was saying that heloved all his family and how much he thanked god for all he has blessed him with. Other than that hedidn’t really express his feelings in any way, he just answered my questions and told me some of hisstories. These stories taught me about the topic by just showing me that most of the time kids also worked inthe fields with their families and stopped going to school. They worked and moved around all their life and that was what their life consisted of. I knew these stories were true because my grandfather had a lot of pictures of him working out in the fields and at the buses. My aunt and grandma were also there to verify to me that it was all true. The benefits about learning about the past through the oral history project were that I learned so much about what my grandfather did when he was younger and how he started his life here in the United States. The drawbacks is that I had to do this project in order to ask my grandfather about his life. I do think that doing an oral history project is an effective way about learning about the past because you just get to ask questions that you would of never of thought of asking before. Also you get to share that with a lot of other people and you get to learn about it from your families side and what they went through than through a stranger.
