Town Stories

Back in Kirby's early days, "The Golden Stallion Dance Hall," was the town's hot spot. If you were a local looking for a good time, more than likely you'd end up visiting this dance hall which was located just outside of the Kirby city limits. Today, San Antonio Auto Auction operates on what used to be the local family dance hall.

The city's present mayor spoke to me about his experience at the dance hall. It was a time where families went together, ate good American food, and danced to music played by a real live band. The hall is where the very first Kirby's Founders Day Celebration was held. The nationally known western hot spot opened its doors for private and public parties in 1967. The business was sold in 1983. In its time, it is said to have hosted numerous top selling country artist's shows, as well as many trail riders during rodeo time.

The Golden Stallion Dance Hall

I lived in Kirby, Texas from 1991 to the year 2000. I loved it there! Yes, it it a small but united community. The schools were and still are acedemically advanced. I went to Kirby Elementary School (now called Hopkins Elementary in honor of the school's principal). I also attended Kirby Jr. High and Freshman year at Judson High School. I was sad I was leaving the neighborhood I grew up in. One of the biggest challenges was adjusting to the San Antonio School system. See, in Kirby schools I felt challenged. When I went to school in San Antonio, I felt like I was ahead of my classmates. I was being taught things in 10th grade that I had already learned in eighth grade. I do not mean to discredit San Antonio Schools. There are great teachers in San Antonio, some of the best, but in general I felt that Kirby Schools offer top-notch, quality education.

Being raised in Kirby, Texas, I speak from experience when I say that it is a wonderful place to raise a child or several for that matter. The city is a well protected city, thanks to the policemen and fire fighters. In spite of the city's small surface area, there is still three city parks, a city pool, quality restaurants, basketball courts, a baseball field, and a running track for exercise.
