In the early morning hours of March 15, 2006, the town of Comfort awoke to the sound of sirens. A building was on fire. It turned out to be one of the oldest structures still standing in the historic downtown area. The building that was burning turned out to be the historic Ingenhuett General Store. Established in 1867 by Peter Ingenhuett, the store had become the longest running continuously-operated general store in Texas. Even though firefighters did an outstanding job of keeping the blaze contained to just one building, it did little to ease the pain of the lost treasure. As of the making of this web page, the cause of the fire had still not been determined. Below are some pictures of what was left of the store just days after the fire, as well as links to other web pages on the store, and the fire.
