SMALL TOWN HISTORY: Luling, TX

Food

Bar-B-Que

City Market Bar-B-Que is no joking matter in Luling, Texas. From People Magazine to the New York Times, all have praised Luling's famous bar-b-que. On a personal note, there is something about City Market's bar-b-que sauce that is just beyond words. Calling it good would be a huge understatement! If your lucky enough to be at City Market on a day when Reverend Garry Brown and Fredd, otherwise known as the Pie Masters, happen to be in town, you're in for a real treat. Not only will you be able to purchase any of their delicious homemade pies, cobblers, brownies, and breads, but you'll also be treated to many of their catchy sayings such as: "If you get the meat, we got the sweets" and "Don't cheat yourself, treat yourself!" There is also a general variety of food in town, ranging from Mexican and Chinese to burgers and pizza. The year-round Farmers Market offers seasonal produce.

Southwest Metal Art business card On some weekends, Larry and Crystal Elliot put out their metal art at the the City's Flea-Mart to sell. They own the Southwest Metal Art. When we spoke to Crystal about her metal work she said, " One mans' trash is another mans' treasure." Must be true, because they create many pieces of art from benches to Bar-B-Que pits out of pieces of iron or metal. They sell shapes of Texas with five stars across the top of it made out of old plow disk. It must be great to have a job that suits you. She does the drawing and he does the cutting.
