How long have you lived here in Fashing?
For 85 years, all my life.
I was born and raised here
What is you ethnic background?
My daddy came overseas from Germany in 1904. My parents are both from Germany. My father came over to the United States when he was three, at the Galveston Bay area. My parents lived in Gonzales before they moved here.
What is the economy like here?
Farming and ranching is the primary source of work and income here today. There are also gas plants here. There used to be big uranium mines, but many have been completely shut down. And there are still some open today.
Why Fashing, Texas and no where else?
My family raised me here and I love it here. Farming is my life. I live it and I know it well. I love the community, people, and land.
My family raised me here. So I have grown to love the land.
Do you know Who built the church?
The Catholic Church was built by the townspeople. I helped many years ago. It cost $4,500 dollars. It was completed on July 22, 1934. I will never forget that day - we were very proud to have our own church nearby.
How did you decide where to place the church?
Well it was simple. The Henke's donated the land it sits on today. It is a 150 x 150 yard spot. I was married there in that church.
Who built your house here in Fashing?
I did along with some family and friends. I am a carpenter also, not just a farmer.
If you had a chance to go to the city, would you?
Not unless I need groceries, I love to farm my land and take care of my cattle. Take me away from here and I don't know what I would do with myself.
What kind of radio do you listen to?
WOAI News radio, and the Polka network in the afternoons when I take a nap.
